FACTS ABOUT THE DETROIT RETIRED CITY
EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION

DRCEA

The DRCEA was founded in 1960 and over the past 53 years has played an
active role in improving and protecting retiree pensions and benefits. The
DRCEA maintains a watch on the City Administration, Mayor, City Council, and the General Retirement System Board of Trustees, continually monitoring actions that may affect pensions and benefits. In 1971, DRCEA’s importance in City government was recognized when the Mayor appointed a retiree to the Board of Trustees of the General Retirement System· By 1973 DRCEA had grown to almost 5,000 members, about 60% of all civilian retirees or beneficiaries at that time.
In 1974 the Detroit City Charter required that the retiree representative on
the General Retirement System Board of Trustees be elected by retirees. The
DRCEA became the acknowledged organization representing civilian retiree
interest in legislative and budget matters. Today there are approximately
12,100 City of Detroit General Retirees of which approximately 65% are dues paying members of the DRCEA which translate to about 7,865 members. The membership of the DRCEA continues to grow on a daily basis. In addition to the dues paying members, the DRCEA has always been available to assist ALL retirees with retirement related issues whether they are a member or not. The DRCEA is and has always been a volunteer based organization and all services provided by the directors and elected officers are done in the spirit of service and not compensation. Also relevant to the consideration of the DRCEA is it’s operational structure, which includes a Pension Liaison, a Political Action Committee, and a Medical Benefits Committee. Moreover the DRCEA keeps in contact with the membership through newsletter mailings, meetings, website www.DRCEA.org and other sponsored events.
